5 people injured as tractor trailer, cars involved in fiery crash on Highway 401

TORONTO – A major section of the eastbound Highway 401 in Mississauga was closed down due to a serious three-vehicle collision early Saturday morning.

Five people were taken to hospital following the collision, which left the highway closed between Highway 410 and Dixie Road for several hours as police investigated.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Dave Woodford says a tractor trailer crashed through a concrete barrier between the collector and express lanes.

He says it caught fire as it slipped down an embankment and knocked off a light post.

Woodford says the driver of the truck has been taken to hospital suffering from serious injuries.

Three other victims from two separate vehicles involved in the crash were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“There’s nothing left virtually of the truck, it was completely engulfed in flames,” Woodford said.

A pedestrian on a path below the highway was also taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
