Cost of salvaging MV Miner won’t be paid with public money: Dexter

HALIFAX – Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter says taxpayers won’t have to foot the bill for any cost overruns associated with the dismantling of the MV Miner.

The retired bulk carrier ran aground on Scaterie Island last September.

A New York-based salvage company is expected to begin dismantling the vessel this month.

Dexter says the salvage operation is privately run and the province isn’t obligated to contribute financially.

The government says the company is expected to recover the one-million-dollar salvage cost by selling the scrap metal.
