EXCLUSIVE: Lawyer wants independent review into handling of triple-murder case

There are calls for an independent review into the mishandling of information in a high-profile triple murder case.

Three men have been convicted of first degree murder in connection with a shooting at the Bolsa restaurant on New Year’s Day 2009 that left three people dead, including an innocent bystander.

Nathan Zuccherato and Michael Roberto were both sentenced to life in prison, but Real Honorio’s sentencing is now on hold after a bombshell revelation. Last week, it was revealed that the crown’s star witness ‘MM’ confessed to an RCMP officer that he was the sole shooter-but that information was never passed along to the prosecution and defence.

“(The revelations) could be regarded as a game changer for Mr. Honorio,” said defence lawyer Greg Dunn, adding they’re looking for a mistrial.

“What’s important for the accused is the fact someone else has confessed to these crimes… what’s important to the public is how did we get to this particular juncture?”

Dunn said he plans to ask the solicitor general for an independent inquiry.

The RCMP has not commented on the case. Honorio is scheduled to appear in court on June 8, but it’s still not clear if sentencing will happen.
