The fiancée of the Calgary man killed in an avalanche on the weekend issued a statement Monday, saying Nick Roberts loved sledding in the mountains.
“He (Nick) told me many times that if he had to die young he would want it to be in the mountains,” Meg, Nick’s fiancée, said.
“Nick lived for his weekend sledding trips and loved every minute of it. He and his friends were experienced riders with extensive training in avalanche safety.”

She said Nick’s friends used their training to save the life of an injured friend.
“They weren’t able to save my Nick. but they saved a life out there and that I will never forget.”
“They will forever be heroes in my mind,” she said. “And I know Nick is saying the same thing, because my strength is coming through him.”
The fire mechanic’s fiancée said she is also grateful for the search and rescue crews for doing what they do on a daily basis.
“This was tragic, but it’s one of the risks people take to live a big and meaningful life, and this is exactly what Nick did.”
The Calgary Firefighters Association IAFF Local 255 also issued a statement.
“We are very saddened and shocked by the tragic passing of one of our own,” it read.
“Nick will be greatly missed. He will be remembered for his integrity, his sense of humour and his passion for family, work and enjoyment of life.”
The association also extended its “sincere appreciation” to everyone for their support and condolences.
