Ontario partners with Airbnb to inform users of rights and responsibilities

Ontario is partnering up with Airbnb to launch a pilot project on bringing awareness about homeowners’ and consumers’ right and responsibilities when booking through the online accommodations service.

Airbnb will begin to offer email notifications for hosts during tax season to remind them of their tax obligations.

A webpage will also be created to inform users on regulations and consumer protection rights such as contracts, cancellations and refunds.

There are currently more than 11,000 hosts in Ontario that list their properties on Airbnb.

The province says a typical host makes about $280 a month in additional income and more than 375,000 people visited Ontario via Airbnb in 2015.
