The American Meteor Society received 55 reports of the bright meteor — also called a bolide — over the Alps. Reports came in from France, Italy, Switzerland and Spain.

The meteor streaked across the sky just after sunset. As it entered the atmosphere, it left a long, trailing tail. It can be seen brightening several times and breaking apart.

Though we get meteor showers almost every month, February is not associated with any. However, debris is always entering our atmosphere, which can provide the odd bright fireball.

It’s unclear if any of the meteor seen on Wednesday made it to the ground.
