A master plan that calls for big changes to the Lougheed Mall area of Burnaby will go to a public hearing next week.
The vision is, over 30 years, turning the 29 hectare area into a pedestrian friendly neighbourhood with thousands of more condominiums.
The proposal includes over 1 million square meters of residential development; which could be an estimated 11,000 new housing units.
Lougheed is the latest 1960’s era mall neighbourhood to undergo a potential transformation.
Brentwood in Burnaby is already being redeveloped and Oakridge in Vancouver is going through a planning process.
Independent planner Brent Toderian says Metro Vancouver is a leader in North America in redeveloping malls surrounded by large parking lots into more pedestrian and transit friendly neighbourhoods.
The Lougheed master plan to goes public hearing at Burnaby City Hall on February 23rd.
