WINNIPEG — A press conference to discuss climate change in Winnipeg was interrupted by a lone protester Friday morning.
The young man held up a sign reading “Keep it in the ground” as he stood in front of Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, Jim Carr, Mexico’s Secretary of Energy, Pedro Joaquin Coldwell, and the United States Secretary of Energy, Dr. Ernest Moniz. All three were signing a memorandum of understanding on climate change and energy collaboration.
The protester was allowed to hold up his sign for a few minutes before he was quietly escorted out by security.
The three energy ministers met in Winnipeg this week to share information on low-carbon electricity, clean energy technology, climate change adaptation and reducing emissions from the oil and gas sector.
“The Memorandum of Understanding we signed today reflects our governments’ shared vision for a future where an expanding clean energy sector, a sustainable environment and a strong economy go hand in hand,” Carr said.
Canada will invest $300 million a year in clean technology.
