A rally took place Sunday afternoon to protest the demolition of a mansion in Vancouver’s Kerrisdale neighbourhood.
The Adera Street home, estimated to be worth in excess of $6 million, is only 20 years old and underwent a $350,000 renovation just three years ago.
Rally organizers say the planned demolition is “an incredible waste of resources” and has no place in the city.
“Look at it,” said Martha Cheney, one of approximately 50 people at the rally. “It’s better than most of us could ever dream of living in, and yet it’s going to go to the dump.”

City councillor Adriane Carr says razing the home, even though it isn’t considered a “character home,” will have an impact on the neighbourhood.
“The homes that are built are bigger and no one lives in them. So our neighbourhoods are emptying out,” she said.
“That’s having an impact on our schools. This is a snowballing process that is really changing the very fabric of the social life and the physical landscape that makes Vancouver so unbelievably precious.”
