VERNON – In separate cases, the courts have sentenced crooks who stole charity money and vandalized parking meters in Vernon.
In November, a security camera at a pet store captured Matthew Stadel stealing a Royal Canadian Legion poppy donation box from a counter top.
The 29-year-old also stole merchandise from a drug store and a tip jar from a liquor store.
Stadel was handed a two day jail sentence, one year probation and fined $500 in Victim Surcharge fees.
The other case deals with more than 100 parking meters being vandalized in December, costing the city about $20,000 in repairs and replacements.
Mitchell Ronald Szekely, 34, pleaded guilty to mischief.
He was sentenced to 20 days jail, one year probation and fined $100.
Charges of theft and possessing instruments for breaking into coin devices were stayed by the prosecutor.
