WATCH: Fireball spotted across southern Ontario, eastern U.S.

A fireball was spotted in the sky over Washington, Virginia and Maryland on Saturday evening, January 30. – Feb 1, 2016

Onlookers across much of the eastern seaboard were surprised to see a bright fireball light up the night sky on Saturday.

The fireball was captured on dashcam video.

As of Monday afternoon, the American Meteor Society received 674 reports of the bright meteor.

A pilot also captured the fireball to the right of his plane as he approached New York City.

Reports stretched from North Carolina to Massachusetts and west into Ohio and southern Ontario.

Fireballs are bright meteors that burn up in Earth’s atmosphere. If they reach the ground, they are called meteorites. It’s unknown if fragments of this fireball reached the ground.
