No charges against Toronto police in death of woman in balcony plunge: SIU

TORONTO – The Special Investigations Unit says there are no reasonable grounds to charge Toronto police officers in the death last month of a 30-year-old woman.

Police responded to an east-end Toronto apartment building on April 18 after receiving a report that a man and woman were fighting.

The police watchdog says officers heard a woman yelling inside a seventh-floor apartment, but she refused to open the door.

Fearing for the woman’s safety, an officer kicked the door open and police entered the apartment but were unable to find the woman.

The balcony door was open and when officers looked over the railing, they saw the woman on the ground. She was pronounced dead a short time later.

SIU director Ian Scott says the officers could reasonably conclude that the woman might have been in danger of imminent bodily harm if they had not entered the apartment.
