PINEY, Man. – Officials are meeting this morning to discuss whether residents forced from their homes in southeastern Manitoba due to forest fires can go home.
Sixteen residents who make up the village of Badger in the Rural Municipality of Piney were evacuated last weekend.

Piney Reeve Duane Boutang says conditions are still very dry, which is hampering firefighting efforts.
Fire crews are managing to hold the Badger fire, which has blackened about 53 square kilometres of land.
The province has imposed a travel ban on recreational activity in the area as people prepare to celebrate the Victoria Day long weekend.
Fire bans are in place in provincial parks in the southeast, and all burning permits have been cancelled.
