Gunshot in fourplex leads police to suspect in other crimes

CALGARY – Two men have been charged after a semi-automatic rifle went off inside a S.E. fourplex early Tuesday morning.

Around 2:20 a.m., Jan. 19, police were called to the building in the 2700 block of 10 Avenue S.E. by neighbours after a bullet went through a bedroom wall from an adjoining unit.

In the process of evacuating the building, police said they took two men into custody. One man had a 9mm magazine in his pocket, officers said.

A search warrant was executed on the residence that evening and police found a 9mm semi-automatic rifle and a spent shell casing.

Thirty-one-year-old Reginald Denis of Calgary, has been charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, possession of a weapon obtained by crime, possession of a firearm without a licence, possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace and two counts of possession of a weapon contrary to a prohibition order.

Denis was also arrested on an unrelated outstanding warrant. He is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 21.

Hol Dominick Garang, 23, of Calgary, was arrested on eight outstanding warrants that include robbery, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

He is also set to appear in court on Jan. 21.
