McGill applies to move Redmen football team from Quebec to Ontario conference

MONTREAL – The McGill Redmen could be on the move to a new conference.

McGill University has applied to have its football team leave the Quebec conference for the Ontario University Athletics conference.

The OUA is expanding to 11 teams with the addition of Carleton University next year. That opens the door for a 12th team, which McGill is applying for.

McGill executive director of athletics and recreation Drew Love said in a release Thursday that no decision had yet been made to leave the six-team Reseau du sport etudiant du Quebec football conference, and that the majority of McGill’s sports teams will stay put.

Love added four of McGill’s 28 varsity teams already compete in the OUA.

“It would provide us with enhanced marketing opportunities to resume our long-standing rivalries with a number of teams, most notably Queen’s, which typically draws our largest crowds,” said Love.

“In addition, it would give us a chance to play in front of many of our alumni and families of current and prospective McGill students.”

The Redmen finished last in the RSEQ last season at 0-9.
