REGINA – Former Saskatchewan Roughrider Weston Dressler says he is “upset and saddened” that the team didn’t work harder to keep him around.
On Thursday the Riders announced they had released Dressler and fellow fan-favourite John Chick from the team, largely due to salary constraints.
On Friday, Dressler responded to the announcement through social media.
“Through my last eight years with this organization I believe my actions and words have always expressed my desire and joy to be part of Riderville,” Dressler wrote. “The negotiations that took place, or lack thereof, led me to believe I was never in the Roughrider plans for the 2016 season and beyond.”

Riders General Manager and Head Coach Chris Jones said Thursday that Dressler and Chick were simply too expensive to keep.
“Decisions like these are never easy but we felt it was necessary in order for us to move forward and better position ourselves as a football team,” Jones said. “We spoke with each player and their respective agents at length in an attempt to negotiate more cap friendly contracts but unfortunately could not reach satisfactory agreements.”
Much of Dressler’s statement is a ‘thank you’ to Rider Nation for the support he received throughout his career. He says it was an honour to wear the green and white.
“Being a Saskatchewan Roughrider has allowed me to develop many friendships that will last a lifetime. It has truly been an honour to represent the Riders and all of Saskatchewan.”
