SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan (U of S) has named its next College of Law dean. It was announced on Tuesday that Martin Phillipson will take over on July 1 from interim dean Beth Bilson.

Phillipson said his highest priority during his five-year term will be to maintain and build the college’s profile as a top law school in the country.

“We are one of Canada’s oldest and best law schools,” said Phillipson, who added aboriginal law will also be a priority.

“Because the college is home to the Native Law Centre, we are well established in the area of aboriginal law and we will be at the forefront of the indigenization of our campus.”

Phillipson also pointed to the college’s roots in community legal assistance services for the inner city, which gives law students practical hands-on experience.
