Winnipeg filmmakers take home the top prize from Toronto film critics

WINNIPEG – Two Winnipeg filmmakers are returning home with $100,000 after winning the top prize from the Toronto Film Critics Association.

Veteran filmmaker Guy Maddin and his co-director Evan Johnson won the Rogers Best Canadian Film Award for their surreal outing “The Forbidden Room.”

In his acceptance speech at the January 5 gala in Toronto, Maddin joked the duo will use the moneyto bring an N-F-L franchise to Winnipeg.

Maddin was born in Winnipeg and has produced TIFF film selections such as The Saddest Music in the World and My Winnipeg.
