North Shore Rescue hopes Mt. Seymour peak will be named for Tim Jones

The search manager for North Shore Rescue is hopeful that a peak on Mt. Seymour will be named for Tim Jones.

“He loved that peak. He was humble in his way, so I’m not sure he would have ever promoted it for himself, but I think it’s a real fitting tribute to a great man,” said North Shore Rescue’s Doug Pope.

The peak between Pump Peak and the top of the mountain is only known as “2nd Peak” on local maps, and Pope says that can be a problem during rescues.

“There is confusion among the public. Some people erroneously call it second Pump Peak, and when we call people when they’re lost or there’s an injury up there, it’s really important that people can accurately describe where they are,” says Pope.

“We think having it as an official name will help us and help others in saving lives up there.”

There is also a much more sentimental reason for the campaign to have the peak carry the Jones’ name. As a paramedic and a leader with North Shore Rescue, he saved hundreds of lives and was instrumental in leading and developing the search team.

“We came up with the idea, and I’m not exactly sure who brought it forward, soon after Tim passed away. It’s almost been two years that we’ve been talking about this, and we’ve already been starting to call it Tim Jones Peak on our map.”

Pope says the province won’t consider naming a landmark after someone until at least two years after their death, but so far he’s heard nothing but support for the idea. He’s hopeful there will be an official ‘Tim Jones Peak’ ceremony early in the new year.
