Mario Gutierrez, who trained at Hastings Racetrack in Vancouver for six years, has won the 2012 Kentucky Derby.
Gutierrez was riding I’ll Have Another, and was in post number 19. This is the first time a winner from that slot has won in the 138 years of the Kentucky Derby.
He is originally from Mexico, and took the racing scene in Vancouver by storm, before moving to California.
He gave a big shout out to Hastings race course and Vancouver after he won, saying ‘Vancouver has been so supportive.’
It was Gutierrez’s first time and win in the Derby, and it is I’ll Have Another’s owner and trainer’s first win as well.
I’ll Have Another has tweeted his thanks to his fans:
