CALGARY – A First Nations chief says Alberta’s new climate change policy strengthens his hand in arguing for a greater role in planning energy development.
Grand Chief Steve Courtoreille of the Treaty 8 First Nations says he’s still waiting to hear what the plan means for his people.
The policy repeatedly emphasizes that aboriginals must play a prominent role in plans to combat climate change.
Courtoreille says that should translate into direct input into monitoring environmental change in the oilsands region.
He says environmental impacts in the area can’t be separated from climate concerns.
First Nations have long argued that they should be involved in designing new projects rather than being simply presented with completed plans and asked for approval.
