Woman wears hairy ‘stache in memory of loved one who died from prostate cancer

It is known as the month of the moustache, when men sport a variety of dusters to raise awareness about prostate cancer.

But move over boys, Mavis Olsen is proving that ladies can also get their ‘stache on.

The Lethbridge woman has been wearing a thick black stick-on moustache for the last three years for the entire month of November, making her a Mo Sista.

“It is amazing it grew in really fast, right from day one,” joked Olsen, who has been getting a lot of attention from customers at Costco, where she works. “It creates a lot of interest, a lot of double takes shocks some people.”

Olsen sports the facial hair for her uncle who died from prostate cancer in 2007.

“It is for him. It just brings me close, brings the memories back alive,” she said. “He was the best uncle a girl could ever have growing up on the farm. He was my hero.”

While spreading awareness with her swanky ‘stache, Olsen also gets some interesting comments.

“Some people ask ‘is that a girl’. They do say to me occasionally ‘you do know you have a mustache, right?’,” she explained.

It’s a surprise to see a woman with a mustache,” Olsen’s manager Bruce Mackenzie said. “I think once they realize it is Movember to raise awareness, it is a positive thing.”

So far her mustache has raised over $600 for the cause, which is focused on prostate and testicular cancer research, as well as men’s overall health.
