Vancouver city councillor motions 30th anniversary celebration of Expo 86

A Vancouver city councillor is pushing for the city to put on a celebration to mark the 30th anniversary of Expo 86.

Councillor George Affleck introduced the motion saying Expo 86 was a pivotal event in the city’s history, showcasing Vancouver to the world.

2016 will mark the 30th anniversary of Expo 86 that officially opened on May 2, 1986, running for 172 days.

Expo 86 saw over 22 million visitors and contributed billions of dollars to Canada’s economy.

The motion says the infrastructure legacy from the expo — including the SkyTrain Expo Line, Science World, BC Place Stadium and Canada Place — still contributes to the city’s economy and tourism sector.

The motion calls for the 30th anniversary celebration to be an acknowledgement of the legacy and success of Expo 86.
