After a close race, Julie Dzerowicz has been elected in Toronto’s Davenport riding — one of many highly sought after ridings the Liberal party was hoping to reclaim.

NDP candidate Andrew Cash pulled off a miracle last election, ending a 49-year reign for the Liberal party in the riding in a landslide victory over three-term Liberal MP Mario Silva by a whopping 25.8 per cent.

A smaller riding, with a diverse, multicultural population, Davenport stretches from a CN line on the west, to Dufferin Street on the east and Eglinton Avenue on the north.

The riding was held by the Liberals from 1962 to 2011, mostly by longtime MP Charles Caccia from 1968 to 2004, and in 16 concurrent victories the party never won by less than 10 per cent until Cash won the seat.
