Pats end goalless drought against Giants

REGINA – The Regina Pats hadn’t scored in what seemed like forever heading into Friday’s game against the Vancouver Giants, but they finally snapped the 135-minute goalless drought late in the first period when Connor Hobbs beat Cody Porter to tie the game at one. The Pats would make it 2-1 a few minutes later off Sergei Zborovskiy’s first goal of the season.

The middle period saw the Giants pull even before the five minute mark when Ty Ronning scored his second of the game. The Pats though struck right back to re-take the lead just shy of the eight minute mark as Colton Kroeker banked the puck in off Porter for his first of the season, but the Giants came right back with two more of the their own, including Ronning’s hat trick goal to make it 4-3 after 40 minutes.

Overager Daniel Wapple took over between the pipes to start the third. He was beaten early in the stanza when Dakota Odgers buried a shorthanded goal to give Vancouver a 5-3 lead. With the Pats pressing late in the game, Riley Woods cut into the lead by scoring his first WHL goal. As time ticked down, Wapple went to the bench for the extra attacker and the gamble paid off. Woods fired a shot off the pad of Ryan Kubic and Lane Zablocki sent the rebound off the post before it redirected in off Kubic’s skate and into the goal to tie the game. After great chances for both sides in the overtime period, Adam Brooks fired home his first of the season to seal the 6-5 OT win for the Pats.
