A curious black bear took a liking to a kayak in Alaska recently and part of the encounter was caught on video.
Mary Maley was on a solo kayaking trip from Ketchikan, Alaska to Petersburg, Alaska, when she encountered the bear in Berg Bay. She had just carried her tent and food up to the cabin on the shore to dry when she heard a noise behind her.
After about five minutes of watching the bear gnaw on her kayak, Maley decided to take a video while trying to shoo the bear away.
“Leave my kayak alone! Go away! Get away from that kayak!” Maley can be heard screaming.
At one point she pepper sprays the bear when he gets too close.
The bear does not pay any attention to Maley and continues to attack her kayak, even though Maley pleads with the bear. “Please stop that, please stop breaking my things,” she yells.
When the video ends, the bear continues to attack the vessel for about 10 more minutes.
Eventually it leaves and Maley is now in the process of trying to get her kayak repaired.
