Edmonton police officer pepper sprayed after car chase

EDMONTON – An Edmonton Police Service officer was pepper sprayed in the face early Wednesday morning while trying to arrest a man accused in a string of incidents, including armed robbery.

It all started in south Edmonton, where the male suspect was spotted driving a stolen black Dodge Ram truck on the Whitemud at 53rd Avenue. He was approached by a police cruiser, but took off.

The truck was tracked for over 12 kilometres from the sky by the Air 1 police helicopter to 83rd Street and 110th Avenue in the Cromdale neighbourhood. The man ditched the stolen vehicle, where he was approached by an officer. Police said that’s when the suspect pepper sprayed the officer.

The man ran away to hide in a nearby apartment building, where he was sniffed out by a canine unit.

The man, who has not been identified, was charged with possession of a weapon and assaulting a police officer with a weapon.

Police said the officer who was peppered is in good condition.
