Quebec bar owners rally against proposed anti-tobacco law

MONTREAL – The Union of Quebec Bar Owners is rallying against a proposed provincial law aimed at curbing tobacco use.

The Quebec Liberal government tabled Bill 44 back in May.

The aim was to end smoking on restaurant and bar patios just a decade after Quebec first prohibited smoking inside the establishments.

“Smokers and non-smokers coexist without a problem,” said Peter Sergakis, the group’s president.

The new law would include a number of changes:

– Prohibit smoking on terraces

– Prohibit smoking in a car with someone under the age of 16 inside

– Consider the use of e-cigarettes tobacco use

– Prohibit smoking within nine meters of a door to a public place

– Prohibit the sale of flavoured tobacco

Sergakis suggested separating the terraces into smoking and non-smoking with about one and a half metres in between so the smoke can dissipate.

The National Assembly is scheduled to begin discussing Bill 44 Tuesday morning.
