Inaugural music festival brings thousands to The Forks

WINNIPEG — Interstellar Rodeo kicked off in Winnipeg Friday to a crowd of around 2,500.

Organizers expected they would see the same numbers for both Saturday and Sunday as well.

Sarah McLachlan was Friday night’s headlining act and Dwight Yoakam takes the stage Saturday night at 9:30.

“Festivals are like summer camp, you spend the year travelling through clubs, so when you get to stay for a couple of days it’s pretty great,” said Casey Laforet, whose band Elliott BROOD is one of Saturday’s performers.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The festival comes with a unique concept… yes it’s about the music, but it is also about wine. Specific wines have been carefully selected and brought in from several specialty shops throughout the city.

The drinks get served to you while you sit and enjoy the music. Each wine has been chosen and paired with each musical act and is meant to enhance the listening experience for festival attendees,

The hot, humid weather didn’t keep the crowds from enjoying the sights and sounds.

Temperatures hovered around 34 C Saturday afternoon but with the humidity felt more like +40.

“You have to tune your instruments a little more,” said Elliott BROOD percussionist, Steven Pitkin.

Elliott BROOD is three-piece, alt-country band from Ontario but are no strangers to Winnipeg.

The group has played in the city a number of times and were most recently back in town in February.

“You guys have the craziest of extremes of weather, which I’m sure I don’t have to tell you,” said Elliott BROOD guitarist Casey Laforet. “We were here for Festival du Voyageur in February and it was -43… now its +45”

Sunday is the last day of the three-day festival.
