Summary: Voters in Northumberland-Peterborough South will elect a rookie MP in a sprawling riding along the northern shore of Lake Ontario.
Boundaries: The riding includes all of Northumberland County, a small part of Durham County, and the areas of Peterborough County between Peterborough and Rice Lake. It contains most of the defunct riding of Northumberland-Quinte West, but replaces Trenton and the rest of Hastings County with the southern end of Peterborough County and the eastern end of Durham County.
Last Election: Conservative MP Rich Norlock, who has chosen to retire, defeated Liberal candidate Kim Rudd by 32.8 per cent in Northumberland-Quinte West.
Had this riding existed in the last election with these new boundaries, the Conservatives would have taken it by 32.3 per cent more votes than the Liberals (based on polling results).
History: Norlock has been MP for most of the new riding since 2006. Prior to that, the Northumberland area had been held by Liberal MPs Paul Macklin and Christine Stewart since 1988.
Demographics: According to the 2011 census, English is the first language of 93.5 per cent of people, the third highest total in Ontario, while the median age is 47.4, fourth highest in the province.
