Summary: NDP MP Wayne Marston seeks re-election in Hamilton East-Stoney Creek, one of Hamilton’s five ridings—but will need to defeat a former Hamilton mayor to do so.
Boundaries: One of two predominately suburban ridings in Hamilton, this electoral comprises parts of Hamilton north of the Niagara escarpment and east of Mountain Brow Boulevard and Kenilworth Avenue.
Last Election: Marston won a third term in this riding, defeating Conservative candidate Brad Clark by nine per cent.
History: Prior to Marston’s election, eastern Hamilton had been a Liberal stronghold for decades, first under John Munro from 1962-1984, and then former Deputy Prime Minister Sheila Copps from 1984-2004 before Tony Valeri held it for the Liberals for one term.
Demographics: The riding is fairly nondescript demographically, averaging in the middle of the pack both province-wide and nationally in income, age distribution, and number of immigrants.
