Federal Election 2015: Elmwood-Transcona riding results

Summary: The longtime home of former NDP MP Bill Blaikie is a riding to watch this election, as his son hopes to retake the seat for the party, after the Conservatives won by a narrow margin in 2011.

Boundaries: Winnipeg’s easternmost seat, Elmowood-Transcona contains the areas east of the Red River between the CN rail line and Kildonan.

Last Election: Conservative candidate Lawrence Toet defeated one-term NDP MP Jim Maloway by 300 votes.

History: Prior to Toet’s win in 2011, this riding had exclusively gone NDP, primarily under Bill Blaikie, who served as an MP in the area from 1979 to 2008.

Demographics: 20.5 per cent of people have Ukranian origins according to the 2011 National Household Survey, the fifth highest number in Canada
