PENETANGUISHENE, Ont. – One of Canada’s most prominent politicians says an early federal election call would be an affront to taxpayers who will foot the bill.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne says it would be unfortunate if the federal Conservatives drop the writ early as they are anticipated to do tomorrow.

Wynne says that if those rumours are true, kicking off an 11-week campaign would be unusual, unnecessary and a waste of taxpayer’s money.

She says that modern elections don’t require months and months of electioneering.

Wynne made the comments today during a news conference in Penetanguishene, where she was visiting a local festival.

Recent changes by the Conservative government allow candidate and party spending to increase by as much as 675-thousand-dollars for every day the campaign extends past the typical 37 days.
