TORONTO – Mimico Creek has been declared oil-free and the last of the ducks taken in by the Toronto Wildlife Centre for cleaning will be released back into the wild on Monday.
More than 100 ducks were covered in mineral oil after a transport truck rolled over on a highway on July 13.
Ontario Provincial Police have since charged an Alberta man with careless driving.
“We’ve dealt with many minor oil spills but we’ve never had this many animals impacted,” said Andrew Wight, team leader for the wildlife rescue team in a media release.
Staff at the wildlife centre were able to release the first group of oil-free ducks on July 16.
The centre is also accepting donations to help recover the costs incurred with the cleanup operation.
