The United States was second in 38.27 seconds and Brazil third in 38.68.

The Canadian team had to spend a few nerve-wracking moments after the race to see if the result held up. The Americans filed a protest saying Rodney stepped out of his lane during a baton exchange, but the protest was denied.

Elsewhere, Derek Drouin of Corunna, Ont., won the men’s high jump with a leap of 2.37 metres. Teammate Mike Mason of Nanoose Bay, B.C., was second with a jump of 2.31 metres. Donald Thomas of the Bahamas won bronze at 2.28 metres.
