REGINA – Saskatchewan Roughriders’ running back Jerome Messam is having quite the season so far in 2015.

The bruising back enters week five as the CFL leader with 306 rushing yards, and also has a league-best 509 yards from scrimmage. Messam has been in fine form on the field, but he’s also been getting fined off the field.

This week Messam was dinged $1000 for wearing the wrong coloured spat in last Friday’s 27-24 loss to the BC Lions

“Only reason why I wore the black spat is because our alternate uniform is predominantly dark. The pants are like smoke grey and the socks were dark so I was just trying to match the uniform,” said Messam following Friday’s practice. “It kind of ticked me off a little bit.”

This isn’t the first time the 30-year-old has heard from the league this season. Messam was fined twice earlier in the year for violating the CFL’s visor policy, which now requires a documented medical condition for wearing a tinted visor.

“The things is, I’ve had a dark visor my whole career,” proclaimed the 6’3, 245 pound tailback. “My issue is more like lighting and migraines, so that’s why I wore it.”

The CFL has an escalating fine system, so each infraction has been a little bit more expensive for number 33.

“Yeah, I got two fines for the visor and my third one was a big hit to my wallet,” said Messam, who’ll likely be more mindful of which colours he’s wearing come game time.

“It is what it is. We’ve got to follow the rules, and if you don’t you get penalized, but I just thought it was a steep fine for tape.”
