TORONTO – Police say a man found dead at the bottom of Lake Simcoe was not wearing a life jacket when the canoe he was in capsized on Wednesday.

South Simcoe police say the 59-year-old Alliston man and his wife had been finishing at the south end of the lake around 5 p.m. when it flipped due to rough conditions.

The woman was saved by a boater nearby but the husband went missing.

Police conducted a search and rescue but found the man’s body at the bottom of the lake just after 7 p.m.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday to determine the exact cause of death.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.
