High-speed Internet for all First Nation schools in Saskatchewan by 2014

REGINA – All schools on First Nations in Saskatchewan will have access to high-speed Internet by the end of 2014.

SaskTel and the provincial and federal governments announced they will fund the project.

First Nations Minister Ken Cheveldayoff says this will ensure that educational technology in First Nations schools is equal to those in other provincial schools.

Ottawa will contribute $11.6 million, which is part of SaskTel’s $30 million project to enhance its rural connectivity across the province.

A lack of connectivity in on-reserve schools was one of the major issues raised by the 2011 Senate report on First Nation education.

In all, 89 schools will be connected to a fibre line by SaskTel by the end of 2014.
