EDMONTON – Police are calling their latest seizure of a drug known as GHB as the largest amount ever taken by Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams.
“The GHB seizure is the largest of its kind by ALERT,” said spokesperson Mike Tucker.
ALERT says the drug is also known as the date-rape drug, but adds it’s usually abused as a party drug.
The team seized 8.5 litres of GHB, along with methamphetamine, Percocet, Valium, six firearms, ammunition and $16,100 in cash, from a home in northeast Edmonton on June 18.
“A total of 44 charges relating to drugs, guns, stolen property and breaches have been laid against four individuals,” added Tucker.
Police say GHB is colourless and odourless and was being sold in water bottles.

“People that take GHB aren’t taking it everyday,” explained said Insp. Darcy Strang. “Normally, it’s like a party drug… that’s used at raves, a party drug that’s used at bush parties, kind of a club drug.”
Officials say the drug is also be used to come down after a stimulant high, from cocaine or meth, for instance.
“When you have a party you normally have some form of alcohol there,” said Strang.
“When you take alcohol and GHB together, that combination is literally liquid death.
“There have been deaths in relation to this before.”
They warn even a small drink from an unsuspecting person or child could lead to fatal results.
Mark Boivin, 31; Chantel Garnier, 31; Kevin Jurach, 58; and Aaron Watt, 19, are facing 44 charges.
