TORONTO – A 20-year-old Florida woman is facing child neglect charges after she drove her car into a river and then begged first responders to save her children allegedly trapped inside.
Angelina Lopresti spent much of Monday night in Daytona Beach drinking and partying with co-workers before she got in her car, around 10:30 p.m., and drove off at a fast speed according to a police report.
Her car ended up in the Halifax River and she ended up clinging to a wall with her legs in the water.
But Lopresti’s story took a strange turn when a police officer arrived. His experience of the incident was captured by a body camera.
“They’re in the car. They’re not breathing,” Lopresti could be heard saying. “Please, those are my kids, those are my kids.”
Authorities immediately sprung into action, worried children were dying, and were certainly shocked with what they found when they reached the car.
Lopresti’s children, as it turned out, were actually asleep in their beds. Officers confirmed the three-year-old and five-year-old’s whereabouts approximately an hour later and recognized that their mother had left them alone to “drink and drive.”
The 20-year-old mother later confessed to being “[expletive] drunk.” Police say she smelled of alcohol and was belligerent.
Lopresti was arrested early Tuesday on two counts of child neglect without harm and could also face DUI charges pending blood test results. She posted a $2000 bail and was released from Volusia County Jail later that morning.
