The ongoing Senate expense scandal was fodder for John Oliver Sunday evening as he poked fun at the price of the recently released report and some of the controversy’s details which seem to fit right in to Canadian stereotypes.
“Wow, hockey and fishing trips,” he said, joking about some of the items senators spent public money on.
“This scandal could not be any more Canadian if public money was used to get Drake to drink maple syrup on Niagara Falls.”
The $23.5 million report released last week flagged roughly $977,000 in claims which auditors think broke the senate’s rules.
Some of the alleged infractions include $35,549 in travel claims from one senator, golf trips, flights to a wedding anniversary, fishing trips, and a flight to the 100th anniversary of the Toronto Curling Club.
“A man named Terry going to a curling club anniversary. Kudos Canada, you made this scandal more Canadian after I explicitly said that that could not be done,” Oliver said.
“Well played. Well played, Canada.”

But it wasn’t just the questionable expenses that Oliver poked fun at. He also suggested the bill for the audit itself was outrageous.
“How the hell do you spend nearly $24 million auditing stamps and breakfasts? Canada, I think you’ve forgotten what a scandal is,” he said before bringing up Rob Ford’s ongoing tenure as a city councillor.
