Dutch short ‘Munya in Mij’ wins Jury Grand Prize at Rockie Awards

TORONTO — Dutch short Munya in Mij (Munya in Me) was named the Jury Grand Prize winner Tuesday night at the 2015 Rockie Awards, part of the 36th Banff World Media Festival.

The award was presented by actor Colm Meaney at a gala hosted by Jane the Virgin star Jaime Camil.

The 20-minute stop-motion animation film from The Netherlands was selected from winners in 27 categories and beat out high-profile shows like How to Get Away With Murder, COSMOS: A SpaceTime Odyssey and Outlander.

Canadian winners this year were Guidestones: Sunflower Noir, Seven Digital Deadly Sins, Odd Squad and Les Beaux Malaise.

Munya in Mij, directed by Mascha Halberstad and written by Fiona van Heemstra, follows a 10-year-old girl who is bullied on her daily excursions to a supermarket until she decides to embrace who she is.

There were 156 nominees for this year’s Rockie Awards and winners were chosen by more than 350 entertainment industry executives from around the world.

The Banff World Media Festival wraps up Wednesday at the Fairmont Banff Springs. Shaw Media, parent company of Global News, is a Grand Patron of the event.
