Calgary musician reunited with stolen standup bass ‘Blue Belle’

WATCH: Some good news for a Calgary musician after his prized blue bass was stolen: Hans Sahlen has been reunited with his Blue Belle. Tony Tighe reports.

CALGARY – Calgary musician Hans Sahlen has been reunited with his precious standup string bass, “Blue Belle,” after last week’s desperate plea to the public and a $500 reward posted by Axe Music.

Blue Belle, along with an amplifier and music , had been stolen from Sahlen’s van on May 16. His amp had already been returned by an unsuspecting Calgary couple who bought it from the thieves but recognized it from photos on social media.

On Saturday, Axe Music posted that “fairy tales do occasionally come true” since two young men found the bass—still in a carrying case—in an alley in the Eau Claire area.

The two returned it to Axe Music, with a few “bumps and scrapes,” but Sahlen says she’s “happy to be back.”

“Belle is—she’s good! She’s happy to be home, I can tell,” said Sahlen as he played a few notes. “Somebody obviously did take it out and took a look at it, and they probably realized what it was and zipped it up and left it.”

Axe Music’s Brian Cymbaluk said Blue Belle’s saviours heard through word of mouth there was a reward offered for the bass, and brought her back.

“No questions asked, as we had said; the reward was offered up,” said Cymbaluk. “And here she is on our door step…back with Hans, and we couldn’t be more tickled.”
