TORONTO — Manufacturing issues similar to those blamed for the delay of TTC streetcars have also caused some Metrolinx vehicles to be sent back.
Metrolinx was expecting at least part of its $770 million order from Bombardier late last year. It did receive some vehicles but sent them back due to what it deemed improperly built frames.

“It’s frustrating,” said Anne Marie Aikins, Metrolinx spokesperson. “We were hoping to begin testing last fall and we haven’t been able to.”
Metrolinx had planned to begin testing the new vehicles, set for use on the Eglinton Crosstown LRT.
“We’re not taking a substandard product,” said Aikins.
The Bombardier issues aren’t expected to ultimately affect the line’s 2020 timeline.
In an email to Global News, Bombardier said the manufacturing issues have been dealt with and the company is moving forward.
“Those items are in the past,” said spokesperson Marc Laforge. “Since then we have taken important corrective measures to address these issues, which have all been corrected or are in the final stages.”
The news comes at a bad time for Bombardier as the company announced Thursday it’s cutting 1,750 jobs — mainly affecting workers in Montreal and Toronto.
