Kelowna Rockets sweep Brandon Wheat Kings to win WHL Championship

The Kelowna Rockets are going to the Memorial Cup.

Leon Draisaitl and Rourke Chartier scored shorthanded goals 19 seconds apart in the third period, as the Rockets defeated the Brandon Wheat Kings 3-0 to sweep the WHL Championship and win the Ed Chynoweth Cup.

The win gave the Rockets a 4-0 sweep over the Wheat Kings, capping off a dominating run through the WHL playoffs, winning 16 of 19 games.

The final win wasn’t easy though, as the Wheat Kings held even with the Rockets through two periods, and started the third on a powerplay.

But the Rockets quickly broke the game open in the third with Draisaitl and Chartier’s goals, and the Wheat Kings were unable to muster many chances once down.

Nick Merkley added a goal with 5:30 left in the period. Jackson Whistle added 19 saves for the shutout in front of 6,428 fans at Prospera Place in Kelowna.

It’s the fourth Ed Chynoweth Cup for the Rockets, and their first since 2009.

The Rockets will meet the Rimouski Oceanic, Quebec Remparts and the winner of the OHL Championship between the Erie Otters and Oshawa Generals in the Memorial Cup, which will be played in Quebec City from May 21 to 31.
