Mom of injured flag person speaks out as construction season launches

SASKATOON – It has been a long week for Cynde Fetherston. On Sunday, May 3, her son was critically injured while flagging traffic in a work zone on Highway 6 near Spalding, Sask.

A semi rear-ended a car which then collided with a truck that smashed into her son, Sam Fetherson, 21.

“He’s going to likely be moved out of ICU this afternoon,” said Fetherston Friday morning.

“He’s no longer critical.”

Fetherston considers herself and her son Sam, lucky.

“Everyone, slow down. Don’t drive tired,” she warns.

“There’s too many lives at stake. It ruins too many lives, theirs included.”

The investigation is ongoing. No charges have been laid.

Fetherston’s message comes as the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure kicks off its summer construction season. In light of the tragedy, work zone changes are pending, according to minister Nancy Heppner.

“I actually had a conversation with the father of one of the boys that was killed in that accident. He had a suggestion about a better use of rumble strips or speed bumps in the work zone,” said Heppner, emphasizing the change will be made as soon as possible.

More than 500 signs will be posted in various work zones throughout the province in what will be the biggest construction season ever, with a record $842-million budget.
