Parks Canada responds to concerns over Jasper development

Parks Canada is responding to an online petition encouraging concerned citizens to speak out in opposition to a proposed development in Jasper National Park.

The petition, which began circulating last week, seeks to prevent the construction of a roadside viewing area along the Icefields Parkway. The project was approved in 2010 subject to an environmental assessment. A decision on the future of the project is expected by the end of the month.

The petition was circulated widely on social networks like Facebook and Twitter, amassing more than 100,000 signatures in just five days. In response to the petitions, Parks Canada was quick to issue its own fact sheet, entitled “Proposed Glacier Discover Walk – Setting the Record Straight.”
