Signs thanking visitors for not smoking were set up in the square Wednesday.
In a close vote last month, city council decided to ban smoking in the popular downtown space.

Supporters of the ban, including Mayor Don Iveson, believe it will make Churchill Square a safer and more welcoming place.
Those against the ban believe it will be tough to enforce.
Those caught smoking in the square will be warned and could face a fine of up to $250.
