Canadian acts Drake, MAGIC! up for Billboard Music Awards

TORONTO — Canadian acts Drake, MAGIC! and Justin Bieber are among the nominees for Billboard Music Awards announced Tuesday.

Drake is up for Top Male Artist and Top Rap Artist and his surprise release If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late is nominated for Top Rap Album.

MAGIC! earned a nod for Top Duo/Group and the band’s hit single “Rude” is up for Top Radio Song.

Bieber, who has 62.5 million followers on Twitter, is nominated in the Top Social Artist category.

But it’s superstar Taylor Swift who dominates the nominations with 14, followed closely by Sam Smith with 13 and Iggy Azalea with 12.

Swift is nominated with Smith, Ariana Grande, One Direction and Katy Perry for Top Artist and she is up against Azalea, Grande, Perry and Meghan Trainor for Top Female Artist.

Azalea, Trainor and Smith will challenge 5 Seconds of Summer and Hozier in the Top New Artist category.

Drake is competing for Male Artist with Smith, Pharrell Williams, Ed Sheeran and Justin Timberlake while MAGIC! is challenged in the Duo/Group category by 5 Seconds of Summer, Florida Georgia Line, Maroon 5 and One Direction.

The Billboard Music Awards nominations are determined on album and digital song sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social media activity from March 10, 2014 to March 8, 2015.

The awards will be handed out in Las Vegas on May 17. Ludacris and Chrissy Teigen will host the show.
