MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – Two police officers who were wounded in a fatal shooting Friday night in Mississauga, just west of Toronto, have been released from hospital.
One of the officers was shot in the torso but was not seriously injured thanks to his bullet-proof vest, according to Peel Region paramedics. The second officer was stabbed.
Ontario’s police watchdog says a 30-year-old man was shot several times and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident happened after police responded to a call (on Queen Frederica Drive near Dundas and Dixie) and “interacted” with a man.
One witness told Global News that it sounded like eight or nine shots were fired. Another witness said it sounded like fireworks.
The SIU has assigned five investigators and three forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of the incident. Three subject officers and seven witness officers have been designated.
